ADIA Lab appoints two Nobel laureates to advisory board
ADIAL Lab board now comprises 12 globally recognised scientific experts
#UAE #Research - Abu Dhabi-based research institute ADIA Lab has appointed two Nobel Laureates, Professor Robert F. Engle and Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, to its Advisory Board, bringing total membership to 12 globally recognised experts.
Professor Engle is Professor Emeritus in the Management of Financial Services at New York University’s Stern School of Business and co-director of the Volatility and Risk Institute. He was awarded the 2003 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for pioneering work on analysing economic time series with time-varying volatility,
Meanwhile, Professor Novoselov was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovery of graphene alongside Andre Geim. He currently serves as Director of the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials at the National University of Singapore and has authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications bridging scientific discovery and technological innovation.
SO WHAT? - Founded in 2022, ADIA Lab has quietly been building a global reputation in data and computational sciences. The lab stands out as a hub for transformative research, applying advanced data science and AI to address pressing societal challenges. Its advisory board includes renowned scientists from Harvard, MIT, Stanford and UC Berkeley, with members having received four Nobel Prizes, two ACM Turing Awards, an ACM Gordon Bell Award, and numerous other prestigious scientific honors.. The new appointments further strengthen ADIA Lab’s multidisciplinary oversight of its research programmes.
Here are some key points regarding ADIA Lab’s advisory board:
Abu Dhabi-based ADIA Lab, which is dedicated to basic and applied research in data and computational sciences, has appointed two Nobel Laureates, Professor Robert F. Engle and Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, to its Advisory Board, bringing total membership to 12 globally recognised experts.
Professor Robert F. Engle, awarded the 2003 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, developed the ARCH model that revolutionised financial econometrics and remains a cornerstone of modern risk management practices, with recent research focused on climate risk.
Professor Engle is Professor Emeritus in the Management of Financial Services at New York University’s Stern School of Business, co-director of the Volatility and Risk Institute, and co-founder of the Society for Financial Econometrics.
Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov, awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovery of graphene alongside Andre Geim, identified the thinnest and strongest material ever discovered, opening new possibilities in materials science, electronics and nanotechnology.
Professor Novoselov serves as Director of the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials at the National University of Singapore and as authored more than 600 peer-reviewed publications, and founded major research centres including the National Graphene Institute.
The Advisory Board oversees development and implementation of ADIA Lab’s research priorities and programmes, with members collectively holding four Nobel Prizes, two ACM Turing Awards, an ACM Gordon Bell Prize and numerous prestigious scientific honours.
The incumbent 12-member Advisory Board includes Dr Horst Simon as ADIA Lab Director, Professor Shafi Goldwasser recipient of the 2012 ACM Turing Award, Professor Steven Chu co-winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Alex Pentland founder of MIT Connection Science, Professor Miguel Hernán director of CAUSALab at Harvard, Professor Guido Imbens Applied Econometrics Professor at Stanford, Professor Jack Dongarra recipient of the 2021 ACM Turing Award, Dr Edward Jung co-founder of Intellectual Ventures, Professor Marcos López de Prado global head of quantitative research at ADIA, and Professor Alex Lipton global head of quantitative research at ADIA.
ADIA Lab engages in basic and applied research across data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, high-performance computing and quantum computing, exploring applications in climate change, energy transition, blockchain technology, financial systems, health sciences, education and telecommunications.
The institute is an independent, standalone entity supported by Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), a diversified investment institution managing approximately $829 billion in assets on behalf of the Government of Abu Dhabi.
ZOOM OUT - ADIA Lab will host the third edition of the ADIA Lab Symposium from 27-29 October 2025, bringing together four Nobel Laureates and leading global experts in AI and data science. The three-day programme explores transformative applications of AI in climate science, health science and the digital economy. The symposium will feature Nobel Laureates Robert Engle, Steven Chu, Guido Imbens and Konstantin Novoselov alongside leading academics from top universities, government institutions and international organisations.
