ADNOC and AIQ in a world-first, with 10 offshore oil wells managed by AI
ADNOC plans to deploy AIQ's RoboWell across 300 onshore and offshore oil wells
#UAE #energy - Abu Dhabi's diversified energy and petrochemicals group ADNOC became the first oil production company to operate offshore oil wells autonomously using AIQ's RoboWell, an AI-enabled well control system. AIQ is an energy AI technology pioneer, owned by ADNOC and G42 subsidiary Presight. ADNOC deployed RoboWell across an initial 10 oil wells located in the NASR offshore oil field, approximately 130km northwest of Abu Dhabi City. The well management solution uses algorithms to autonomously operate wells, maximising efficiency, minimising emissions and managing risk.
SO WHAT? - Formed in 2018, AIQ has been developing a suite of solutions for the energy industry, specifically for oil and gas exploration and production. The deployment of RoboWell for offshore oil wells is a sign of both AIQ's growing maturity as an AI software developer, and the sophistication of ADNOC's use of artificial intelligence (the energy giant reportedly derived $500 million of value from its AI usage in 2023).
AIQ and Halliburton last year launched RoboWell, across the NEB field in Abu Dhabi. So, AIQ's products are being used more intensively in the field and are also becoming more widely available. AIQ's borehole analysis software WellInsight is available via AWS Marketplace, while RoboWell software has recently been made available via Halliburton’s Landmark iEnergy hybrid cloud. In addition, the recent acquisition of AIQ shares by Presight, provides another international sales channel for the suite of AI-powered oilfield solutions.
Here are some key points on the deployment of RoboWell for ADNOC’s offshore field.
ADNOC has announced the deployment of AIQ’s AI autonomous well-control solution RoboWell, in its operations at the offshore NASR field, being the world’s first offshore deployment of RoboWell.
Located 130 kilometers northwest of Abu Dhabi, NASR is a fully digital offshore field that uses a wide-range of technology solutions to maximise efficiency.
RoboWell has been deployed across an initial 10 wells at NASR, with further deployment of the AI solution scheduled at over 300 wells this year, across ADNOC’s offshore and onshore operations.
The world's first AI-enabled autonomous well control system, RoboWell reduces oil producers’ reliance on supervision by oilfield operations personnel.
RoboWell uses cloud-based algorithms to autonomously operate wells and self-adjust according to changing conditions. The solution enhances the safe operation of the well, improves efficiency, reduces the need for travel and physical interventions, and so minimises carbon emissions.
ADNOC’s aim is to become the world’s most AI-enabled energy company, integrating AI from the control room to the board room, to maximise efficiency and move towards autonomous operations.
RoboWell was developed by AIQ and ADNOC’s Thamama Excellence Centre.
The AI system was first deployed in 2023 at the onshore North East Bab (NEB) field, ADNOC’s first smart field, which has pioneered the implementation of AI.
ZOOM OUT - Earlier this month ADNOC Drilling Company confirmed the award of a $733 million order for three island drilling rigs, which will be fulfilled by ADNOC Offshore and its rig manufacturing partner Honghua Group. Built for operation in Abu Dhabi's offshore Zakum field, the rigs will be built with full-digital operations in mind. ADNOC Drilling and Honghua Group will work with AIQ to leverage AI for rig operating systems. All new oil drilling and production rigs can now be expected to be manufactured for digital operation with an increasing number and scale of AI-enabled autonomously managed processes.
