G42 & NVIDIA to create Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab in Abu Dhabi
Earth-2 project to dramatically enhance accuracy of weather forecasting
#UAE #meteorology - Abu Dhabi-based AI powerhouse G42, and and AI infrastructure leader NVIDIA will develop cutting-edge climate technology in the UAE leveraging NVIDIA’s Earth-2 platform. Establishing an Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab in Abu Dhabi as a hub for climate innovation, the initiative will develop a highly accurate, AI-enhanced weather forecasting model, that will push the boundaries of climate prediction.
SO WHAT? - The hosting of the COP 28 UN Climate Change Conference last year has placed the country in the centre of global policymaking and action to address climate change. As a result, the UAE has included more and more climate-related technology projects, such as Jais Climate the first bilingual large language model dedicated to climate intelligence, which was announced during the conference. The model was jointly developed by G42 and Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI). The establishing of an Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab will significantly increase the country’s capacity to make important contributions to climate and weather forecasting technology.
Here are some key details of the announcement:
G42 has announced that it is partnering with NVIDIA to develop advancing climate and weather technology using AI and simulations, built on NVIDIA”s Earth-2 platform.
Core to the new initiative is the establishment of an Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab in Abu Dhabi as a hub for climate innovation. The lab will aim to dramatically enhance the accuracy of weather forecasting.
The initial target is a square-kilometer resolution weather forecasting model, aiming to increase the precision of global meteorological predictions.
The facility will house over 100 petabytes of geophysical data assets, which will be instrumental in creating custom climate solutions.
NVIDIA’s Earth-2 platform is designed to accelerate climate modeling through high-resolution, AI-driven simulations.
The G42-NVIDIA collaboration will also help organisations achieve sustainability goals by integrating enhanced weather prediction with comprehensive data and visualisation tools.
ZOOM OUT - Last December the G42’s geospatial services company Bayanat and communications satellite services provider Yahsat announced their intended merger to create a new AI-powers space technology services company called Space42. The resulting company will integrate a wide variety of satellite data, technologies and services including geospatial and mobility solutions, satellite communications and business intelligence. Space42’s new combined portfolio, satellite coverage across 150+ countries and AI-enhanced weather monitoring and analysis services, could prove to be another key differentiator for the new Earth-2 Climate Tech Lab being set-up in Abu Dhabi
