Among malicious breaches, 26 percent were AI-enabled, with a further 11 percent of respondents unable to confirm whether attackers used AI. Organisations using extensive AI and security automation recorded breach costs more than $3 million lower than those without these tools, though 23 percent still hadn’t adopted them. Attacks are becoming faster and cheaper to launch as AI adoption among cybercriminals rises, while breaches remain as expensive to find and fix.
SO WHAT? - The $3 million cost gap between organisations using AI security tools and those that aren’t is the number that should worry many organisations across the Middle East. It’s not a marginal efficiency gain, it’s close to half the average breach cost in the region. The report suggests the gap between prepared and unprepared organisations is only going to widen from here.

The three leading factors increasing breach costs were mismanaged secrets and keys, excessive privileges and poor role management, and an inability to prioritise threats.
Lost business was the largest cost category at $3.57 million per breach, followed by post-breach response ($2.17 million), detection and escalation ($1.9 million), and notification ($0.36 million).
The financial and technology sectors recorded the highest average breach costs at $10.67 million each, followed by the industrial sector at $9.6 million.
Phishing, including voice and SMS phishing, was the most common initial cause of breaches at 18% of incidents, with an average cost of $10.41 million, followed by supply chain compromise and social engineering at 16% each.
59% of surveyed organisations planned to increase investment in security tools and governance following a breach, with identity and access management the top priority at 44%.
Only 35% of breached organisations had encrypted sensitive data both at rest and in transit at the time of the breach, despite 69% reporting formal controls to monitor cryptographic security.
Among organisations with a security operations centre, 55% had deployed AI agents within it, with machine identity inventory and lifecycle management the most common control used to secure non-human identities, at 57%.
ZOOM OUT - IBM describes the global picture as an "AI tipping point." The global average cost of a data breach hit $4.99 million this year, a 12 percent rise compared to 2025. The cost is now at an all-time record high, driven by higher detection, escalation and lost business costs. Meanwhile, AI-driven attacks rose 56 percent globally, led by deepfake impersonation and AI-enabled malware. Breaches involving AI model inversion attacks, where attackers extract sensitive training data from a model, averaged $6 million each this year. On the defensive side, organisations using AI and automation extensively in security saved an average of $1.93 million compared with those using none. AI is now shaping both the cost of an attack and the cost of defending against one.
