Saudi AI-native startups nearly 5X more likely to hit $1 million
Saudi AI-natives outpace old-guard startups, but remain only 15% of total
#SaudiArabia #startups - A new report from AWS (Amazon Web Services), produced with UK-based communications firm Strand Partners, finds Saudi Arabia’s AI-native startups are nearly five times more likely to generate $1 million-plus revenue than traditional startups. The Engines of Growth study surveyed 3,413 founders and senior leaders across 20 countries. Saudi AI-native startups posted 150 percent average annual revenue growth, close to the global AI-native average of 156 percent, but significantly ahead of the 62 percent recorded across Saudi startups overall.
SO WHAT? - According to the new report, the gap between Saudi AI-native startups and the rest of the country’s startup scene aligns closely with the global average. However, only 15 percent of Saudi startups qualify as AI-native, compared with 30 percent in the US and 27 percent in Singapore, so this successful segment of AI startups remains a small minority of Saudi Arabia’s startup pool. Whether that share catches up with leading markets could shape how much of the Kingdom’s tech sector actually benefits from the AI shift, versus foreign AI firms selling into the country.
KEY POINTS:
AWS (Amazon Web Services), and UK-based communications firm Strand Partners have released a global report on AI-native startups called Engines of Growth, together with country-specifics datasheets.
The study shows that Saudi AI-native startups are 4.9 times more likely to earn over $1 million in annual revenue than the country’s traditional startups, and reported 150% average annual revenue growth, versus 62% for Saudi startups overall and 156% for AI-natives globally.
48% of Saudi AI-native startups generate more than $400,000 in revenue per employee, nearly double the 28% recorded across Saudi startups overall.
63% of Saudi AI-native startups have built proprietary AI capabilities, such as custom models, compared with 35% of Saudi startups overall.
72% of Saudi AI-native startups have a formal, comprehensive AI strategy in place, ahead of the 68% global AI-native average and well above the 56% of Saudi startups overall.
However, just 15% of Saudi startups qualify as AI-native, lower than the US (30%), France (28%), Singapore (27%), the UK (23%) and Germany (22%).
98% of Saudi AI-native startups have cloud services in place, matching the global AI-native rate and well above the 75% recorded across Saudi startups overall.
89% of Saudi AI-native startups report productivity gains from AI, close to the 91% global AI-native rate and above the 64% recorded across Saudi startups overall.
45% of Saudi AI-native startups use AI for research and development and 27% for simulations or digital twins, both ahead of the wider Saudi startup average of 34% and 19% respectively.
51% of Saudi AI-native startups raised their AI spend over the past year, above the 29% recorded across Saudi startups overall but below the 46% global AI-native average.
ZOOM OUT - Globally, AI-native startups reach billion-dollar valuations in around 3.5 years, half the time it took before generative AI arrived in late 2022. On average, they post annual revenue growth of 156 percent, compared with 65 percent for startups overall and just 12 percent for large enterprises (with 55 percent earning more than $400,000 in revenue per employee). Rather than clustering in pure tech, they're concentrated in financial services, healthcare, life sciences and energy, applying AI to transform established industries. The pattern behind this is that 72 percent have built proprietary AI capabilities such as custom models, 68 percent have a formal AI strategy, and 98 percent employ dedicated in-house AI talent. The report found that capital remains the biggest constraint, cited by 75 percent of AI-native founders, followed by talent shortages (56%) and regulatory complexity (49%).
