Saudi Arabia becomes member of OECD-hosted GPAI
GPAI brings together governments to advance ethical and responsible AI
#SaudiArabia #responsibleAI – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially joined the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), an initiative hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) originating from the G7, represented via Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA). The accession highlights Saudi Arabia’s role as a global leader in AI governance and development. By joining over 40 nations, Saudi Arabia aims to actively shape international AI standards, promote ethical and responsible AI use and attract high-quality global investments into its regulatory environment.
SO WHAT? – By participating in governance structures including the GPAI Council at ministerial level alongside senior stakeholders representing business, civil society, trade unions and technical community, Saudi Arabia gains direct influence over formulation of international policies and standards. The Kingdom has already invested heavily in national and international initiatives to develop and promote AI ethics, governance and responsible AI practices.
Here are some key points about Saudi Arabia joining the GPAI:
Saudi Arabia has joined the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), an initiative hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), represented via Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA).
The GPAI currently consists of 44 member countries that promote responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, informed by multistakeholder expert community bringing together governments, industry, academia and civil society to advance human-centric and trustworthy AI.
In July 2024, the GPAI initiative and OECD member countries’ work on AI joined forces under the GPAI brand to create integrated partnership where GPAI countries participate on equal footing, with expanded partnership encouraging new countries to join subject to consensus among full membership.
Countries seeking to join GPAI as new members are required to demonstrate commitment to shared values reflected in OECD Recommendation on Artificial Intelligence through adherence, proactive role in advancing responsible AI grounded in human rights, and capacity to nominate experts with sufficient AI knowledge.
The partnership is guided by Council, Plenary and Steering Group with support from OECD Secretariat, with GPAI Council providing high-level strategic orientation bringing together representatives from member countries at ministerial level alongside senior stakeholders.
SDAIA emphasised importance of partnerships with global organisations to enhance cooperation in fields of AI ethics and policies, contributing to establishment of international standards that promote safe and responsible use of AI technologies across borders.
