#UAE #bankingAI - Dubai-based banking group Emirates NBD and US AI company OpenAI have announced an enterprise collaboration that makes the bank the first in the MENA region to deploy OpenAI’s GPT models using in-country inference infrastructure in the UAE. The deployment covers customer engagement, risk and compliance analytics, knowledge-intensive workflows and staff productivity. Models will connect to the bank’s internal systems, APIs and enterprise data. Emirates NBD has total assets of AED 1.3 trillion ($354b). No financial terms were disclosed.
SO WHAT? - Banks want frontier models but face strict rules and compliance requirements on where data goes. Running sovereign AI inference inside the UAE removes a major objection, since customer data and prompts needn’t leave the country. Although the announcement is light on detail, signing the second largest banking group in the UAE is a great first reference customer for OpenAI’s inference residency in the Middle East and North Africa.
KEY POINTS:
Emirates NBD and OpenAI have announced a new enterprise collaboration leveraging the US AI company’s recently announce AI inference residency services. The bank is to be the first in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to deploy GPT models using OpenAI’s in-country inference infrastructure.
In-country inference lets financial institutions and other regulated sectors use frontier AI at enterprise scale, while meeting local regulations on data residency, privacy and operational resilience.
The bank will deploy the models across several areas: intelligent customer engagement on digital channels, risk and compliance analytics, automation of knowledge-intensive workflows and employee productivity.
Crucially, Emirates NBD will now be able to connect the models to internal systems, APIs and enterprise data. It expects faster development of digital services, better personalisation, stronger engineering productivity and tighter risk monitoring and financial crime controls.
The deployment supports the UAE’s National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and the growing availability of sovereign AI capabilities that meet local governance and regulatory requirements.
Emirates NBD’s Miguel Rio-Tinto says the bank is embedding frontier AI directly into its operating model, and describes AI as a core capability rather than an experiment.
OpenAI will support the bank with models, tools and UAE-based inference. Farouk El Hamzawi, OpenAI’s Head of Enterprise for MENA, says it hopes to deepen the partnership.
Emirates NBD operates in 13 countries, serves over 25 million active customers and had total assets of AED 1.3 trillion at 30 June 2026. It says 97% of transactions and requests happen outside branches.
ZOOM OUT - OpenAI switched on inference residency in the UAE in August 2026, making it the first MENA market where ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu customers can keep model execution inside national borders, not just data storage. Prompts, files and conversations are processed only on GPUs in the UAE. The UAE joins the US and Europe as the only regions with the service. It builds on the UAE data residency launched in November 2025, which must be enabled first. OpenAI says it tripled its UAE user base over the past year, and plans to extend inference residency to more regions.
