MBZUAI officially launches K2 Think V2 with mobile apps
Official launch follows December 2025 first model release
#UAE #LLMs – Abu Dhabi AI research university Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has officially launched K2 Think V2 with new iOS and Android applications available from this week, providing free access to the frontier-class, sovereign and open reasoning model. The official launch follows the December 2025 release of the K2-V2 foundation model by MBZUAI’s Institute of Foundation Models, and builds on the original K2 Think reasoning system first introduced in September 2025. The mobile applications offer text chat, voice input, chat history, message regeneration and feedback features with secure sign-in through Apple or Google authentication, requiring no in-app purchases or subscriptions (see Links at end of this article).
SO WHAT? – The mobile app launch democratises access to UAE-developed AI technology by removing barriers that typically limit advanced AI model usage to developers and researchers with technical expertise. By offering free, subscription-free access through familiar mobile interfaces, MBZUAI positions K2 Think V2 as an alternative to commercial AI assistants from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google that require paid subscriptions for advanced features.
Here are some key points about K2 Think V2 and the new mobile apps:
Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) officially launched K2 Think V2 with iOS and Android applications available from this week, providing free access to the sovereign reasoning model following the initial release in December 2025.
K2 Think V2 is built on the K2-V2 base model developed by the Institute of Foundation Models at MBZUAI, described as the institution’s strongest fully frontier-class open-source foundation model purpose-built for reasoning tasks.
The 70-billion parameter system delivers leading results on complex reasoning benchmarks including AIME2025, GPQA-Diamond, HMMT and IFBench when compared against other open-source reasoning systems, solving problems step-by-step using long chains of thought.
The K2 Think mobile applications offer text chat functionality allowing users to type questions or prompts and receive AI-generated replies, with voice input capability through microphone activation for spoken queries.
Applications include chat history features enabling users to view, search and scroll through past conversations, with message regeneration allowing re-running of any prompt to generate alternative responses.
Users can provide feedback on AI responses through thumbs-up or thumbs-down reactions on any reply, with secure sign-in through Apple or Google OAuth 2.0 authentication enabling chat synchronisation across devices.
All features are available immediately after sign-in with no in-app purchases or subscriptions required, contrasting with commercial AI assistants that typically require paid tiers for advanced functionality.
The new K2 Think V2 model achieved a 52 per cent hallucination rate on AA-Omniscience benchmark, down from 89 per cent in previous versions, whilst long-context reasoning improved from 33 per cent to 53 per cent, addressing reliability concerns for practical applications.
ZOOM OUT – The release of K2 Think V2 is the latest release in MBZUAI’s K2 model family, marking another step in open, reproducible frontier AI. The latest 70-billion-parameter model upgrades K2 Think with the new base model K2-V2 released in December 2025. K2 Think V2 unlocks a new level of performance, openness, and independence, reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in building frontier-grade AI systems that are globally accessible and fully sovereign. The original K2-65B released in 2024 and the breakthrough K2 Think-32B unveiled in September 2025, demonstrated that state-of-the-art reasoning performance could be achieved with far smaller models and compute footprints. With K2 Think V2, MBZUAI scales those principles to a frontier-class system designed for deep reasoning, long-context processing of up to 512,000 tokens and native tool use.

The mobile-first approach here is underrated. When frontier reasoning models become as accessible as consumer apps, the competitive dynamics shift entirely. K2 Think V2's subscription-free model challenges the commercial moat that OpenAI and Anthropic have been building around advanced capabilities. For teams evaluating sovereign AI options, the fact that this runs on-device with no vendor lock-in fundamentally changes the decision calculus—especially for organizations with data residency requirements or geopolitical considerations. Worth testing against your current stack if infrastructure independence is a priority.
