#UAE #globalrelations - The Cabinet of the UAE Government, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has approved the country’s first international artificial intelligence policy, clarifying the UAE’s stance on global debate, cooperation, policy and regulation of AI. Developed by the Office of the Assistant Foreign Minister for Advanced Science and Technology and the Office of the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, the policy aligns with the UAE's broader foreign strategy, aiming to empower government officials and representatives to lead global discussions on AI governance and help contribute to solving international challenges.
SO WHAT? - The recent meeting between President H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and U.S. President Joe Biden, removed all doubt that artificial intelligence has been pushed to the top of the UAE’s agenda and it intends to be a global player in the field, technologically and geo-politically. The UAE has become increasingly active on the world stage regarding AI in recent years, contributing to global debate and discussion regarding the future of artificial intelligence. This has led to a wider variety of government leaders engaging with their counterparts internationally on AI policy, collaboration, investment and related issues. The new government international AI policy is a purposeful step towards empowering those leaders to drive the UAE’s AI agenda globally, and in a well-coordinated fashion.
KEY PRINCIPLES & GUIDELINES - The new UAE international AI policy defines six core principles: advancement, cooperation, community, ethics, sustainability, and security, aligning with the UAE’s own plans for AI development and ethical, social, and environmental priorities.
The international AI policy includes the following foreign policy:
Participating in international AI forums to shape the development and use of AI through future standards and guidelines.
Advocating transparency and built-in checkpoints within AI tools, enabling governments to enforce ethical standards and implement accountability measures.
Supporting the establishment of international alliances for governing, securing, and developing AI systems.
