Yokogawa develops AI control room for Borouge
AI control room proof of concept targets world's largest petrochemical site
#UAE #manufacturing - Borouge, the multi-billion dollar Abu Dhabi-listed petrochemical company, has partnered with Japanese automation company Yokogawa UAE Industry to conduct a proof-of-concept for AI-powered autonomous control room operations at the world-class Ruwais facility. The collaboration aims to deliver the petrochemical industry's first fully autonomous AI-driven control room at what will become the single largest petrochemical site globally. The initiative supports Borouge’s AI, digitalisation and technology (AIDT) programme, which aims to generate value of $575 million in 2025.
SO WHAT? - The partnership with Yokogawa is the second agreement for an autonomous control room proof-of-concept to be made by Borouge this year. In June the Abu Dhabi company announced a partnership with US industrial automation leader Honeywell to develop an AI-driven autonomous control room. Both companies will develop proof-of-concepts at Borouge’s Ruwais facility in Abu Dhabi. Honeywell is developing a proof-of-concept for the Borouge 2 Cracker (a gas cracker that produces polyolefins),, while Yokogawa will conduct its proof of concept at the Borouge 3 Cracker.
Here are some key points about the new Yokugawa deal:
Abu Dhabi-listed Borouge, the multi-billion dollar Abu Dhabi-listed petrochemical company (ADX:BOROUGE), has partnered with Japanese automation company Yokogawa UAE Industry to conduct a proof-of-concept for AI-powered autonomous control room operations at its Ruwais facility.
The project aims to create the petrochemical industry's first fully autonomous AI-driven control room at what will be the world's single largest petrochemical site.
The initiative forms part of Borouge's AI, digitalisation and technology (AIDT) programme targeting $575 million in value generation for 2025, with $307 million already delivered by Q2.
The control room will use AI to analyse data, identify patterns, and predict anomalies whilst enabling faster corrective actions to reduce unplanned shutdowns and optimise plant performance.
Yokogawa will conduct the proof-of-concept at Borouge's Borouge 3 Cracker facility, whilst Honeywell conducts similar testing at the Borouge 2 Cracker.
The AI system will analyse data, identify patterns, and predict anomalies to enable faster corrective actions that reduce the risk of unplanned shutdowns.
Borouge serves customers in over 90 countries across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, employing more than 2,900 people in polyolefin solutions for infrastructure, energy, and healthcare sectors.
Yokogawa UAE Industry, established in 2005, provides advanced automation technologies across the Emirates with local manufacturing capabilities and comprehensive engineering services.
ZOOM OUT - Borouge's AI, Digitalisation and Technology (AIDT) programme is a cornerstone of its strategy to become the global leader in innovative polyolefin solutions. AIDT has already deployed advanced solutions such as Real-Time Optimiser systems, Asset Performance Management tools, and Advanced Process Control across operations. Meanwhile, the company has formed and strengthened strategic partnerships with leading AI providers such as Honeywell and Yokogawa. Building on this foundation, 2025 focuses on accelerating AIDT adoption through enhanced stakeholder operating models and a robust solution pipeline.
